Prostatitis(inflammation of the prostate), does not directly cause cancer, but in some cases it may be one of the factors that creates a setting for dangerous changes in prostate cells.

In other words, prostatitis itself is not necessarily cancerous, but if it is chronic, long-lasting, and untreated, it may play an indirect role, together with other factors, in the development ofprostate cancer. Chronic prostatitis is considered one of the recognized risk factors for this disease. This becomes especially important when inflammation is associated with DNA damage or structural changes in cells.

Prostatitis is usually a benign and treatable condition that can cause symptoms such as pelvic pain, burning with urination, or frequent urination. By contrast, prostate cancer often progresses without clear symptoms and may remain silent in the body for years.

Some studies have shown that in tissues with chronic prostate inflammation, lesions called proliferative inflammatory atrophy (PIA) are more likely to appear. In some cases, these lesions may gradually turn into abnormal or cancerous cells. However, there is still no definitive evidence showing that prostatitis will cause cancer in everyone.

So if you have a history of prostatitis or are experiencing its symptoms, do not panic, but do take it seriously. Regular visits with a urologist, periodic testing, and follow-up of prescribed treatments are the best ways to protect prostate health. Avoiding self-medication or ignoring the condition can be just as harmful as excessive worry.
