One common question after vasectomy is when sexual activity can be resumed. In general, if you do not have pain or discomfort after vasectomy, you can usually have sex about 7 to 10 days after the procedure. This time is necessary for the surgical site to heal fully and for swelling and bruising to decrease, because it gives the body time to repair the area and minimizes the chance of discomfort or injury.
In the first days after vasectomy, the area around the testicles may be slightly swollen or tender. If sex happens too early, ejaculation may be painful, stitches may open, or swelling may worsen. Even with no-scalpel or no-stitch techniques, the same 7 to 10 day interval is recommended before resuming sex to prevent possible complications.
An important point to remember even after resuming sex after vasectomy is that until the doctor confirms with a semen analysis that there is no sperm in the semen, vasectomy is not considered a definitive and reliable method of preventing pregnancy.
This check is usually done about 3 months after surgery with semen testing, and only when the result shows zero sperm can vasectomy be trusted as a definitive method. Until then, it is recommended to use an additional contraceptive method such as condoms.
If you resume sex after 7 to 10 days following vasectomy but develop severe pain, swelling, or any unusual symptom, it is better to see a urologist. Simple post-operative care and enough patience play an important role in reducing complications and returning sooner to safe, comfortable sexual activity.
