One challenging question in personal and sexual health is whether traditional-medicine approaches can prevent genital warts. genital warts are among the most common sexually transmitted infections and occur after infection with human papillomavirus (HPV). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 31% of men worldwide are infected with at least one HPV type, and 12% of women worldwide have HPV DNA in the cervix.

In traditional medicine, prevention is considered preferable to treatment. According to its principles, strengthening the body's vitality, maintaining temperament balance, improving lifestyle, eating a healthy diet, and avoiding disease-promoting factors are considered among the main foundations for preventing viral illnesses, including genital warts.

In this article, we review traditional-medicine views on genital warts prevention from a scientific perspective. Continue reading to learn about these views. Keep in mind that the traditional-medicine measures discussed in this article do not have a reliable scientific basis; for that reason, physicians do not prescribe these approaches.

Preventing HPV with Traditional Treatments

In traditional medicine, the main focus is prevention and maintaining bodily balance rather than treatment. This view becomes more important for viral diseases such as genital warts because even after visible warts are cleared, the causative virus can remain in the body and reappear if the immune system is weakened. For this reason, traditional medicine places a key role on structured prevention and strengthening the body's defenses in controlling this condition.

Practitioners of traditional medicine propose strategies to help prevent recurrence of genital warts by focusing on lifestyle changes, temperament assessment, and selected medicinal herbs. These strategies include avoiding cold and moist foods, consuming substances such as garlic, ginger, thyme, black seed, and honey, and paying attention to liver health.

It is important to note that these measures have not been definitively confirmed in valid scientific reviews or studies and cannot be presented as reliable methods for effective prevention. The aim of discussing these recommendations is to assess them scientifically so you can make informed decisions and avoid losing the opportunity for prevention by relying on ineffective methods.

Traditional-Medicine Beliefs About HPV

In traditional medicine, health is defined on the basis of balanced humors and temperament quality. From this perspective, preventing diseases such as genital warts is primarily linked to controlling internal bodily factors.

Traditional medicine holds that an excess of thick moisture, coldness, or unbalanced heat in certain organs may make the body more prone to skin and genital problems. Therefore, by improving lifestyle, moderating temperament, and reducing waste substances, it is believed that the underlying conditions for these disorders can be reduced before they occur.

However, from a medical and scientific perspective, genital warts are an infectious disease caused by entry of an external agent, namely a virus, and their development is not related to concepts such as bodily heat, coldness, or moisture.

In reality, and scientifically, infection occurs only when the virus is transmitted through contact and is able to become active in the body. Effective prevention is therefore based on understanding the viral cause, transmission routes, and evidence-based risk-reduction methods, not on temperament characteristics or humoral balance.

Principles and Foundations of genital warts Prevention in Traditional Medicine

From the perspective of traditional medicine, one of the most important home-based principles for preventing HPV is a healthy diet matched to the person's temperament:

  • Avoiding moisture-producing foods: In traditional medicine, people are advised to avoid moisture-producing, heavy, and easily spoiled foods and instead consume warm and dry foods such as ginger, honey, cinnamon, dates, and garlic. Practitioners believe these foods help support immunity and prevent conditions that may lead to genital warts.

  • Body cleansing (purging the humors): Another herbal-medicine principle proposed for preventing genital warts in men and women is body cleansing. Traditional-medicine practitioners believe that cupping, laxative and diuretic herbs, and in some cases wet cupping, help remove waste substances and prepare the body to confront disease-causing factors.

None of these measures, however, has been scientifically confirmed. At best, they are avoidance-based approaches or general immune-support measures. None can make the body specifically resistant to HPV.

Natural Substances Used in Traditional Medicine for genital warts Prevention

In traditional-medicine reference texts, medicinal herbs and natural compounds have a special place in strengthening the body and preventing viral diseases such as genital warts and HPV. According to traditional teachings, natural substances with antiviral or temperament-modulating properties may serve as herbal HPV remedies alongside hygiene measures and a healthy lifestyle, and may help protect the body.

Based on this belief, some herbs are recommended in traditional medicine to prevent genital warts. Keep in mind that the effectiveness of none of these herbal remedies for genital warts has been confirmed by reliable international scientific sources. In the next part of the article, we review these home and herbal remedies from a scientific perspective.

1. Turmeric and Its Antiviral Properties for genital warts Prevention

One herbal remedy for genital warts commonly suggested by many traditional-medicine practitioners is turmeric. In their view, turmeric is useful for preventing and treating viral and inflammatory diseases and may help strengthen the immune system against viruses.

Although turmeric contains curcumin, a compound with antiviral activity, no reputable scientific center has so far confirmed that turmeric prevents genital warts.

2. Garlic: A Substance Used for genital warts Prevention in Traditional Medicine

Garlic is another food considered suitable in traditional medicine for strengthening the immune system against genital warts. Traditional-medicine practitioners believe garlic plays an important role in helping the body fight viral infections such as HPV and, because of its warm and dry nature, is regarded as an herb that modulates the humors.

Scientifically, the main active compound in garlic is allicin, a sulfur-containing substance released when garlic is chopped or crushed; it has strong antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties in laboratory settings.

Although some laboratory studies have reported antiviral properties for garlic, clinical studies have not confirmed its effectiveness in preventing genital warts. Therefore, physicians do not recommend garlic for prevention of HPV infection.

Other Herbal Remedies for genital warts in Traditional Medicine

In traditional medicine, in addition to garlic and turmeric, other herbs are mentioned for strengthening the immune system and preventing viral diseases such as genital warts. These include chamomile, thyme, and peppermint.

From the viewpoint of traditional-medicine practitioners, these herbs mainly support the immune system through antiseptic, antiviral, and temperament-balancing properties:

  • Chamomile: anti-inflammatory and calming effects, immune support, and reduction of skin inflammation

  • Thyme: antibacterial and antiviral

  • Peppermint: immune support and modulation of excess bodily moisture

However, there is not enough scientific evidence to prove the effectiveness of these herbs. For this reason, physicians do not recommend or prescribe them to prevent HPV infection.

Dietary and Care Recommendations for genital warts Prevention in Traditional Medicine

One of the main traditional-medicine recommendations for preventing genital warts is attention to a healthy diet and consumption of natural foods with a warm and balanced nature, such as natural honey, turmeric, fresh pomegranate juice, ginger, and seasonal fruits.

From the traditional-medicine viewpoint, these foods strengthen innate heat and cleanse the body of harmful moisture. Avoiding heavy, cold, fatty, and processed foods is also considered necessary for general health.

Keep in mind that continuous use of some medicinal herbs can have adverse effects. They should be used cautiously, especially in certain groups such as pregnant women, children, and people with underlying diseases, including liver, heart, or autoimmune disorders.

The HPV Vaccine: The Most Successful Way to Prevent genital warts

Methods proposed in traditional medicine or home remedies for preventing genital warts cannot safely, effectively, and specifically make the body resistant to the main cause of the disease.

These approaches are usually general and cannot prepare the immune system specifically to fight a particular virus. Reliance on traditional-medicine methods may cause a person to miss the valuable opportunity for effective genital warts prevention.

In medical science, researchers have developed a vaccine that trains the immune system to recognize and fight different types of HPV. To date, this vaccine is considered the most successful and effective way to prevent genital warts and plays an important role in reducing risk.

Alongside vaccination, safer sexual behavior, such as having a stable sexual partner, using barrier protection, and avoiding high-risk sexual contact, is an inseparable part of scientific and effective prevention of this disease.

Summary

In this article, we reviewed methods proposed in traditional medicine for preventing genital warts, which usually rely on general strengthening of the body, dietary changes, temperament balance, and certain behavioral principles. It must be emphasized, however, that these approaches cannot provide targeted and specific prevention against HPV, and even if they are followed completely, a person may still be exposed to infection.

In addition, these methods lack scientific support and reliable medical evidence. In some cases, they are not only ineffective but may also create false reassurance and increase the risk of infection. Therefore, relying solely on non-scientific approaches may cause readers to miss the best opportunity for effective prevention.

By contrast, proven scientific methods such as vaccination with vaccines like Gardasil, together with safer sexual behavior, are currently considered the most reliable and effective way to prevent HPV infection and genital warts and should be prioritized among preventive measures.
