No. The Gardasil vaccine is not used to treat genital warts. This vaccine is designed to prevent infection with human papillomavirus (HPV), and it cannot remove warts that have already appeared on the skin or genital area.
Why does this matter? Many people who develop genital warts look for a fast, permanent treatment and assume the vaccine can eliminate existing warts. This is a misconception.
Gardasil is an advanced genital warts vaccine that helps protect the body against 9 different HPV types, including types 6 and 11, which cause about 90% of genital warts, and types 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58, which cause most cancers of the cervix and genital areas.
The vaccine does not contain live virus. It is made from virus-like particles (VLPs) that train the immune system so that, if it encounters the real virus in the future, it can control it more quickly. But if you already have genital warts, the vaccine cannot treat that infection because it does not act on viruses that are already active in the body.
Even so, after someone has had genital warts, vaccination can still help prevent infection with other HPV types. For this reason, in most cases people are still advised to receive the vaccine after discussing it with a doctor.
Active genital warts should be treated with specialist methods such as cryotherapy (freezing), topical medications, or laser treatment. People at higher risk, such as those with an infected sexual partner, should also remain under medical supervision and keep up with regular examinations.
